Since 1984, Alexandria Dash has been the transit operator in and around the City of Alexandria, VA. The System started with 30 employees and 17 buses. In the first-year annual ridership was less than 1 million passengers covering 582,000 miles, but it improved service levels significantly over Washington, DC's METROBUS. Not only is DASH working towards a 100% zero-emissions fleet using buses like the Proterra ZX-5, but in September of 2021, in addition to all day frequent service throughout the city, the new network is totally free to ride, operating without any passenger fares.
